Saturday Night Fever
Two weeks after CF’s hafla comes another dance party to attend, this time at Zero, only this time there is the opportunity to check out other dance genres.
The night started out with a warm up routine. The difference with CF’s hafla is here we were given the choreography first instead of following the instructors cold turkey.
The rest of the night pretty much followed a pattern. Each instructor from different genres performed a routine with a few choice students and this is followed by a short choreography with audience participation.
Here’s my conclusion of the different dance genres:
Hip Hop - really fast footwork but what really sets hip hop apart are facial expression and a laid back attitude. We were banging into each other because we couldn’t catch up or were turning the wrong way. They did teach us this really cool move where we stretched out our left hand and slightly pushed our weight to the right ala Rain in the shampoo commercial.
Latin Fusion - more of my thing with lots of gelek-geleks involved. I would love to take up Latin dances in the future, maybe after Conny declares that I have graduated from Belly Dance.
Breakdance - I will never make it as a Breakie. The youngest Breakie there is only 8 years old. Again, this is something that requires a laidback attitude to give it an identity. I had to sit out of the floor work (headstand, etc). There is only so much one can do when one goes commando
Belly Dance - well, I am a student, so of course I’m in my element here
There was a games session where students from the different genres were required to do an impromptu number from a different genre. Guess what the Breakies get - Belly Dance! This announcement was met with loud cheers from us belly dancers
Unfortunately I am not allowed to post that video on YouTube
Party time started after that but after about half an hour into that a lot of people were seen leaving. It was about 11.30 pm when I left for Round 2 in Momo.
